Join us at the Zoo, where you and your children can get your fill of animal-themed knowledge and fun! The Columbian Park Zoo Education Department is working hard to bring you new and exciting programs for 2010. Each of the programs listed on these pages are offered on-site in the Zoo's EdZOOcation Room in the Animal House building (unless otherwise indicated). | Bedtime Zoo Stories Join us on the first Friday of the month at 7:00 p.m. for a nature-themed bedtime story. You'll also get the chance to meet one of the Zoo's friendliest Animal Ambassadors! Come in your most comfortable pajamas, and don't forget your favorite stuffed animal! This program is for children ages 1-5 with an accompanying adult. | Little Cub Club Children ages 3-5 can join us each month for a unique opportunity to learn about the world's wildlife up close and hands-on! Each month focuses on a different animal, exploring its world through personal contact, games, crafts, and age-appropriate science activities. Two sessions of Little Cub Club are offered each month. Sessions will be offered on the second Saturday of the month from 10:00-11:00am and 11:30am-12:30pm. | Youth EDventurer Workshops This unique series of enrichment workshops provides children with hands-on, in-depth exploration of some of nature's most fascinating topics. A series of three workshops will be held in both spring and fall for children ages 6-8 and 8-11. Fees are $18 per child per workshop. Series passes are available for $48 for a 3-workshop series. NEW FOR 2010 - Purchase a Full Year Pass (all 6 sessions) for just $90. | Spring 2010 Young EDventurers Workshops | | ages 6-8 | | "Rainforest Tails" February 13 2:00-4:00 p.m. | Have you ever seen a monkey tail up close? They're amazing! Rainforest animals use their tails for climbing and much, much more. Come check out the Zoo's troop of spider monkeys and their jungle friends for a first-hand look at rainforest tails. | | "Animal Armor" March 13 2:00-4:00 p.m. | Many animals protect themselves with animal armor. Children will meet and touch the Zoo's famous tortoises and armadillos along with a few hard-shelled or scaly friends. We'll learn about animal defense mechanisms and what makes armor so very special. | | "Living Fossils" April 10 2:00-4:00 p.m. | Fossils are a fun way to learn about animals from the past. We'll meet some modern animals at the Zoo with deep prehistoric roots - our very own "living fossils". The Zoo's New Guinea Singing Dogs will teach kids all about how wild dogs first became domesticated pets while a very special guest will demonstrate what life was like in the time of the dinosaurs. | | ages 8-11 | | "Up All Night" February 20 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. | When the sun goes down a whole new world of wildlife emerges! Children will meet a variety of nocturnal animals, including the Zoo's resident owls, and discover first-hand how these creatures of the night make do in the dark. | | "What's Wild" March 20 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. | Wild animals are very different from the cats and dogs we have at home. What separates the wolves and lions of the world from Fido and Fluffy? Domestication does! Kids will learn all about domesticated animals by playing a fun selective breeding game and visiting our Family Farm exhibit. Some tamed wild animals will make an appearance too as we explore what makes a good (or not so good) pet. | | "Animals in Flight" April 17 10:00 a.m. -12:00 p.m. | Are birds the only animals that fly? What are feathers made of? Is a bat a bird? Find out the answers to these questions and more at this flight-themed class. | Junior Zookeeper Program (JZK) The JZK Program is designed for students ages 14-17 that have a special interest in learning about animals and how zoos operate. It is a structured volunteer program. Students are expected to attend several training sessions in the spring and then work scheduled shifts for the duration of the summer. Students will have the opportunity to learn animal husbandry skills and conduct educational encounters in the park. Call (765) 807-1543 for more information.
